One aspect of globalization that I regret is the ever-spreading Western uniform of the suit and tie. I enjoyed the sight of new Afghan leader Hamid Karzai at the president’s State of the Union address in his floor-length, silvery blue robe and hat, looking elegant as he waved to the suited members of Congress.
As sad as the war in Afghanistan is, I have loved watching the handsome Afghani men in their outfits, including unrestrictive cotton pants and calf-length vests.
I hope that after Afghanistan gets all the electricity, clean water, and food it needs, the Afghan men won’t start wearing suits and ties. Italian suits, maybe, but not these Anglo-Saxon straitjackets. Or those nooses we call ties.
