I am disappointed by your Jan. 26 editorial, “Pound foolish on plutonium,” in which you oppose the use of plutonium for civilian power production. To me, seeing our nation waste a material that has energy potential by burying it is as much of an intellectual frustration as wasting food or anything else of value.

The nuclear-armed nations of the world, principally the United States and the former Soviet Union, have enough plutonium among them to amount to the energy equivalent of perhaps 30 billion barrels of oil.

Recycling plutonium is necessary if we are to utilize the full potential of our uranium resources to meet our energy needs.
