Svetlana Feofanova of Russia broke her own indoor world record in the pole vault, clearing 15 feet 5 3/4 inches at the Globen Galan meet Wednesday at Stockholm, Sweden.

Feofanova added a quarter of an inch to the record she set Sunday in Stuttgart, Germany, when she eclipsed Olympic champion Stacy Dragila’s previous indoor world mark of 15-5.

Dragila finished second, clearing 14-8.

Soccer: The Naperville City Council has unanimously granted the Fire the right to play this season at North Central College’s Cardinal Stadium. The team announced a preliminary agreement last week with North Central. The Fire opens the 2002 season at Cardinal Stadium hosting defending Guatemalan league champion CSD Municipal on March 20.

Horse racing: University of Kentucky researchers are questioning the theory that caterpillars who ate cyanide-laced cherry-tree leaves caused widespread foal losses last spring.
