Mildred Tweedle was a respected and award winning teacher for 36 years. A graduate of the Chicago Teachers College and the University of Chicago, she began teaching in 1932 with her first assignment at Lafayette School in Hammond, Indiana before transferring to the Chicago Public School system in 1936. During her long career as an educator on Chicago’s south side, she taught at Caldwell School before being named as Head Teacher of the newly opened McDowell School in 1954, where she remained until her 1971 retirement. Mildred was a resident of Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood for 56 years before moving to Flossmoor in 1967. She resided in Flossmoor for over 31 years and relocated to the Hartsfield Village Senior Living Center in Munster, Indiana in 1999. Mildred was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, P.E.O. Chapter AR and the Daughters of Sweden. During her many years as a Flossmoor resident, she was active in the Flossmoor Woman’s Club, the Flossmoor Garden Club and the Flossmoor Woman’s Association. She was a member of the Flossmoor Community Church and volunteered regularly at the church’s Bargain Box. She was married for 42 years to her late husband Roy Tweedle and is survived by her son, Charles. Other survivors include nieces Donna Berg, Marcia and Dianna Vergin and nephews Jim Vergin and Ed Tweedle. Mildred passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Rd., Flossmoor, IL.
