I was thrilled to see a feature on author Richard Peck in the Books section (“Some lessons learned from students,” Feb. 3).

As a middle school reading teacher, I have enjoyed reading Peck’s books and recommending them to my students. I was excited to clip the article to share with my students.

I was disheartened, however, to see how Peck characterized suburban students, specifically those from Northbrook. I graduated from Glenbrook North High School and can attest to the fact that the school, my parents, my synagogue and my community taught me about my ancestors.

I am glad that Peck is helping to reinforce the idea that older members of a community have valuable wisdom. However, his writing is not necessarily the first time students will come across this idea. Let us not forget to credit the community for the positive ways it can shape young people.
