Each week, I faithfully read all the editorials, including those I generally disagree with. For some time now, I have been asking myself a question about columnists Salim Muwakkil and Molly Ivins. Why are these far-left liberals so angry?

What, if any, set of political or economic circumstances would prompt them to write a positive piece or offer some positive thought or affirmation about any prospective road we might be headed down?

Would it help if we went back in time and made Al Gore the president and had enough members of Congress change parties to give Democrats total control? No, we tried that in 1992. Perhaps they would be happier if all of us poor misguided conservatives would fall off the face of the earth. Maybe if we switched to one-world government under the United Nations flag that would do it.

After reading enough of their work, I realize that there is no answer to this question. Some members of the far left, like Ivins and Muwakkil, are just going to be miserable no matter what takes place. Their glasses will always be half-empty.

Ivins and Muwakkil may find this hard to believe, but many of us agree with President Bush. The state of this union is strong, and will get better every year. It will get better, not because of the Enron investigation, more government regulation, higher taxes, or more government spending. This country will get better because of our basic work ethic and the willingness of those with a positive view of the future to work together to make things better. I wonder if either of them will ever have anything to contribute to that process.
