Naperville is to be highly commended for considering, and eventually adopting, accessibility rules for all new homes (“Making all new houses `visitable,’ ” Metro, Feb. 5).

Opponents who whine about property rights need to remember a couple benefits.

The need isn’t just for people in wheelchairs permanently, but for those who may need a wheelchair temporarily because of injury.

Also, wider halls and doorways will be convenient for moving furniture or bulky items into a home. The extra costs can be offset by adjustments in the rest of the home’s design. These changes need not detract from a home’s beauty and functionality.
