Event: The 20th anniversary celebration of the G.R. N’Namdi Gallery, Chicago. Roots: The gallery, which has showcased works of such revered artists as Jacob Lawrence, Edward Clark and Vicente Pimentel, was founded in 1981 in Detroit by George N’Namdi, who opened the Chicago “branch,” managed by his son, Jumaane, in 1996. Artistic placement: Some of the gallery’s collections now hang in the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, among others. Best-kept secret unveiled: In a tribute to his father, Jumaane commissioned an acrylic portrait of his dad by Chicago artist Stephen Flemister and presented it that night.
