Ruth Marine, 75, of Elgin and formerly of Bartlett, died of breast cancer Saturday, Feb. 9, in Plato Center, Ill. “She was very young at heart and likable,” said her daughter, Laurie Nomellini. “She was like a grandmother to the neighborhood kids.” Mrs. Marine was born in Birmingham, England, and moved to Melrose Park when she was 19. She married in 1946 and during the 1950s helped her husband open Avenue Blacktop Inc., a paving company in Melrose Park. Mrs. Marine was a homemaker who handled the paperwork for the company, which she and her husband owned for more than 30 years. She moved to Bartlett in 1973. “Her passion was gardening,’ said Nomellini, who added that her mother’s garden drew the attention of many passersby. “She was very outgoing and very active throughout her life.” Other survivors include four brothers, Bernard, Ken, Eric and Frank Pryor; and a grandson. A service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Willow Creek Community Church, 67 Algonquin Rd., South Barrington.
