I was appalled at the mindset of the parents in the article about First Communion (“It’s spare no expense now for that First Communion,” News, Feb. 3). For a parent to sigh, “I try to emphasize . . . the sacrament” and then go along with the trend toward opulence is to send her child mixed signals. To give our children the message that the reception of Christ’s body and blood through Communion is an occasion to buy expensive dresses, have limos and DJ’s while the adults have cocktail hour is revolting. This is nothing but a renewed emphasis on materialism. Am I the only one who was disgusted by all this?

As for the last question, “What can you do but go with the flow?” You can do plenty. Have some backbone.
