The Rolling Meadows City Council has hired a consultant to complete design work to improve the often-clogged intersection at Algonquin and Golf Roads.

On Tuesday the council authorized Rosemont-based Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. to complete the final design for $109,000.

The $1.5 million project is expected to help move traffic through one of the 10 busiest intersections in the state, city engineer Michael E. Kerr said.

The plan includes widening the intersection and adding left-turn lanes. There will also be an additional westbound through-lane on Golf Road, officials said. The project also includes new traffic signals at the intersection.

“With all the retail shops, we are getting a lot of increased traffic flow along that area,” Mayor Thomas Menzel said. “It will be easier to get in and out of the whole area. That’s good for business.”

Work is expected to start in January and be completed by October 2003.

The council also voted to pay Burke Engineering $74,000 to design an access road to the Meijer store near the intersection.
