As a Catholic, I was disheartened to read Rev. Michael Pfleger’s comments regarding the status of his pastoral appointment. Although it is certain that in the nearly 20 years he has served at St. Sabina, Pfleger has built many strong relationships with both his parishioners and the community, it is also certain that there are many other Catholics in Chicago who could benefit from his zeal and dedication.
The Gospel directive to “go and make disciples of all nations” is not an easy one to follow, but it is an important one. That is why the sacrament of Holy Orders includes a vow of obedience. In speculating he may leave the priesthood if not allowed to remain at St. Sabina, Pfleger has chosen to place his personal desires over the needs of those he was ordained to serve.
Leaving his pastoral appointment will be a time of some sadness, but will also offer an opportunity for growth. To ignore this opportunity will be a loss for all concerned.
