David L. Roberts, 84, of Carol Stream, a former college administrator, died Friday, Feb. 15, of a stroke in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Born in Chicago, Mr. Roberts was a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream since 1986. He spent most of his early life in Hammond, Ind., graduating from Hammond High School in 1935 and then working at the Minas store. He attended Wheaton College and graduated in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in business. While a student, he edited the yearbook, The Tower, and became the lifetime president of his class. In September 1941, Mr. Roberts entered the Army Air Forces and served two years in the United States and two years in the South Pacific, as a first sergeant in the 69th and 58th fighter squadrons. In 1945, he was given an honorable discharge. In 1946, Mr. Roberts was hired as an administrator for Wheaton College, where he worked until his retirement in 1983. He then spent several years in an advisory position at The Chapel of the Air at the college. Other activities included the Greater Europe Mission, where he served on the board, the DuPage Heritage Gallery, the Christian Stewardship Council, the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton and the Advancement Committee of Central DuPage Hospital. In 1984, Mr. Roberts was asked to become a founding member of the board of Windsor Park Manor, where he served until his death. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Virginia; a daughter, Peggy; and a grandson. Visitation will be held Tuesday from noon until services begin at 1 p.m. in Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.
