Clara T. Falout, 97, a former treasurer of Brookfield who resided in the same home there for about 90 years, died Sunday, Feb. 17, in ManorCare Health Services nursing home in Westmont. When Miss Falout was 7 or 8, her family built a two-story house in Brookfield, where she remained with her youngest sister, Irene. “She loved sitting in her bedroom and listening to the birds outside the window. She delighted in the flowers in the yard each spring. She felt no need to move,” said her niece, Karen Lauer. Miss Falout graduated from Lyons Township High School in La Grange, where she was known for her knack with numbers. She worked as a bookkeeper for Brookfield, eventually becoming the treasurer, a position she held until her retirement at age 65. She continued to work part-time as a bookkeeper for various businesses in La Grange and Darien. Dedicated to her three sisters, she took shopping trips and traveled with them about once a year to Las Vegas. She treated her two nieces and two nephews as though they were her own children, her niece said. Other survivors include two sisters, Sylvia Gross and Helen Christensen. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Johnson Funeral Home, 3845 Prairie Ave., Brookfield.
