I’m sure I’m not alone among animal advocates in saying that I felt sick when I read that scientists had succeeded in cloning a cat (Page 1, Feb. 15). I volunteer at the Evanston Animal Shelter, and every week I see wonderful cats and kittens brought in off the streets. The same thing takes place daily at animal shelters across America.

When there are so many healthy, deserving cats going homeless, what possible good can be served by artificially creating more cats?

If scientists really wanted to do something useful, they would find a way to convince people who already have cats to spay or neuter them.
