Former Bear Dan Hampton, elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this month, entered an innocent plea Wednesday in Cabot, Ark., to a drunken-driving charge and was given a March 26 trial date.

Hampton, 44, who played collegiately at Arkansas, was arrested Jan. 28 by state police, his second arrest in five years.

Days later, he was elected to the Hall of Fame despite fears he expressed to the arresting officer that the arrest could affect the voting.

Hampton faces charges of driving while intoxicated, refusing to submit to a breath test, careless and prohibitive driving and failing to register his sport-utility vehicle.

– Former NFL star receiver James Lofton and ex-Indiana coach Cam Cameron were added to the Chargers’ staff.
