When registration opens March 1 for the Summer of Learning program in Indian Prairie District 204, parents will find they can choose from several new courses and locations.

To add space to the program, which has been growing by 300 registrations annually, classes will be held in Scullen and Still Middle Schools.

“Last year we used all of Still, and that makes it hard for the maintenance staff to complete summer cleaning,” program coordinator Cindy White said.

The district also tries to rotate the course offerings to different elementary schools every summer. The classes, which begin June 17, will return to Cowlishaw Elementary School and will get a new start at Brooks, Graham and White Eagle Elementary Schools.

Among the new offerings will be third year Legos classes. Other classes for elementary students will cover reptiles, amphibians and polar animals. For middle school students, a new Adventure Studies class will include topics and activities such as team building and problem solving.

White also is hoping to add more advanced technology classes, such as Web site design. Fees for each class will increase to $60 a week, up $5 from last year.

“The increased fees are due to the new teachers contract,” White said.

Discounts are available for registering before April 2 and signing up more than one student per family. Regular registration is available until June 4.
