I have to take issue with your Feb. 16 editorial “Speech and spam.” The editorial stated, “Regulations against them, however, have to pay heed to the constitutionally protected right of free speech. Yes, a telephone pitch to buy a timeshare in Arizona is a form of speech.”
I can assure you that nobody ever intended for the Constitution to protect the right of a total stranger to repeatedly call my house at all hours of the day and night to try to sell me something. Not every form of speech is protected by the Constitution.
Also just because telemarketing is a huge industry and lots of money changes hands because of it doesn’t make it legitimate.
Forget about the “do not call” lists and instead let the people who actually want telemarketing calls to opt in. I shouldn’t have to beg telemarketers to leave me alone.
