Notwithstanding my several conversations with Alex Rodriguez, his Feb. 18 article perpetuates the myth that airlines oppose security and safety enhancements (“Airlines fended off security upgrades,” Page 1). We do not. We look at each proposal on its merits and comment on its practicality and effectiveness. When we criticize, it is because we do not feel the proposed “enhancement” will provide a benefit.

Recently the Department of Transportation removed baseball bats from the list of prohibited carry-on items. We think this is wrong. It will provide potential terrorists with the means of penetrating the newly hardened cockpit doors. Yet, according to the myth Rodriguez perpetuates, our opposition is an attempt to weaken security. Our comments identify strengths and weaknesses aimed at ultimately insuring well-informed decision-making.
