Chicago Transit Authority officials were investigating an accident involving two employees who were injured after they fell–one more than 20 feet to the street below–while working on elevated tracks in the Loop.
The employees were on the elevated structure at Lake and Wells Streets before 5 a.m. when both of them fell, said CTA spokeswoman Maria Toscano. One worker fell onto the tracks but not from the structure.
Investigators are trying to determine whether a Green Line train possibly struck the two men, ages 36 and 41, Toscano said. Officials were also looking at the possibility that they fell while trying to avoid the train.
The 36-year-old, who broke his shoulder and hip after falling onto the street, was in fair condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other employee, who suffered cuts and scrapes, was treated at the hospital and released.
