The Village Board is backing a developer’s plan for a key piece of downtown property.

The board approved a redevelopment agreement Monday with Chicago developer Joel Hillman for the Cook Street Plaza project, which would be built on about an acre at the corner of Cook and Station Streets.

The developers will present their proposal for stores and condominiums to the Plan Commission.

Retail space would total about 18,000 square feet and could include nine businesses. A landscaped brick walkway would wind through the Old English-style building and connect to other businesses.

Twenty to 24 condominiums would be built above the stores and cost from $275,000 to $550,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath condominiums would have 9-foot ceilings, gas fireplaces and skylights.

The proposal includes 98 underground parking spaces, 63 of which would be for public use.
