Two years in a row, Francisco Clavet knocked Andre Agassi out of the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. Agassi wasn’t about to let it happen again Tuesday, dominating Clavet 6-3, 6-2.

Third-seeded Pete Sampras had an even easier time, disposing of Byron Black 6-1, 6-2 in just 44 minutes. But two of the top four seeds lost: No. 2 seed Tommy Haas was beaten by Carlos Moya 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-3, and fourth-seeded Guillermo Canas lost to Michel Kratochvil 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

– Serena Williams, who withdrew from the Family Circle Cup two years ago to honor the NAACP’s boycott of South Carolina for flying the Confederate flag, will play in next month’s tournament in Charleston. The flag has been moved from atop the Statehouse dome to a nearby Confederate memorial.
