I have appreciated the changes in Tempo recently, and I’m definitely ready to give new comic strips a chance.
But I have to take exception with the discontinuation of “Fred Basset” (Page 2, March 3).
“Fred Basset” is a subtle, well-crafted, charming comic strip.
It also, on occasion, would experiment with daring, formal explorations of the comics medium.
I realize it is not being written and drawn by the original artist.
But, unlike some other ghosted strips you run that have none of the soul of the creator’s classic work, the contemporary “Fred Basset” strips stood on their own.
As fewer people turn to print media as their information source, it’s important to keep the things that make newspapers unique not only fresh but also familiar.
“Fred Basset” is a classic, comforting familiar strip. One of the reasons I have loyalty to the Tribune is because of its comics pages.
I will now be reading “Fred Basset” daily on the Internet.
I’m curious to find out how I feel about reading the comics on the computer screen and how, in the long run, this will effect my reading habits.
