With the steel tariffs, President Bush rendered domestic industries reliant on steel less competitive, invited a serious trade war with our allies that could greatly harm our exporters, opened the door for countless other pleas from domestic producers to be sheltered from foreign competition, showed he does not really believe his own rhetoric about the virtues of free trade (so why should anyone else?), and once more told the world to do as we say, not as we do.

It must be Clinton’s fault.
