Salim Muwakkil’s grudging praise for Gov. George Ryan’s moratorium on executions strikes me as small-minded and petty (“Gov. Ryan’s role as an accidental hero,” Commentary, March 11). When men do good things, it does not behoove us to search deeply for ulterior motives. If you look hard enough, you can probably find them.

Why not instead simply accept Ryan’s moratorium for what it is, and credit him with performing a commendable act of courage and compassion?
