In the March 9 editorial “The hurdles to peace,” you acknowledge Israel’s “legitimate security concerns” but inexplicably discount the idea that Israel would need to retain any of the West Bank or Gaza for security purposes. Israel was attacked in four major wars by neighbors who, if anything, have become more belligerent toward its existence. Without the Jordan Valley as a buffer, Israel is dangerously susceptible to Iraqi tanks rolling into Jerusalem through Jordan. Without Palestinian compromise in this area, there can never be a final agreement.
