I am an American Jew who is interested in peace and justice in Israel-Palestine, and who believes that Israel should end the occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. I am writing to thank the Tribune for its presentation of a wider variety of information and opinion about the conflict than what frequently is found in other media. In a context where coverage by others often merely means rephrasing of official statements by the Israeli government, and opinion pieces supporting the actions of the Israeli government, I applaud efforts to offer a larger, more complex picture of the conflict.
As a person holding a doctorate in communications, I recognize that striving for excellence in news coverage is not an exact science but an art–an art that is often embodied in attitude and direction. When I read the Tribune about Israel-Palestine, I look for and expect to come in contact with more than one of the many sides of this story. I am glad that the Tribune strives to do just that.
