As the county commissioner of the 5th District, I must take issue with the Tribune’s characterization of my service to the people of Cook County and, specifically, to the residents of this district where I have proudly served since 1994 (Editorial, Feb. 24).
Because my district includes two of the poorest communities in the nation, I have worked hard to bring much needed quality health care to area residents.
By putting the needs of the community first, I spearheaded the building of state-of-the-art clinics in Ford Heights and the Robbins Medical Center. I have also supported the increased use of the Wellness on Wheels Van and the Mammography Van, which bring these vital services right to residents’ doorsteps.
I have supported the boot camp and construction of the new Cook County Hospital, not because I am an “administration puppet” but because these initiatives save taxpayer dollars.
Despite the escalating demands of the health and criminal justice systems, every budget I voted for was balanced.
As chairwoman of the board’s Tax Delinquency Subcommittee, I have returned thousands of parcels of land back to the tax rolls in an effort to spur economic development and progress to blighted areas across the county. I am equally sensitive to the need to create open spaces in our urban environment and as a representative on the board of NeighborSpace, I have continuously supported the acquisition of vacant land for this very purpose.
As a working mother, I have supported a number of initiatives that have helped level the playing field for women, minorities and working families, such as the Child Support Enforcement Ordinance, the Long-Time Homeowners Ordinance and the opening of the county’s first day care center.
I believe an effective leader is a consensus builder who works cooperatively with other public officials to deliver services to constituents. I am certain the constituents of Cook County’s 5th District believe I am that kind of leader.
