Within a few weeks, construction will start on the newest elementary school in Indian Prairie District 204.

Called West Glen Elementary School, the facility will be located on land owned by the district at Bailey Road and Westglen Drive in Naperville.

The Board of Education approved a construction budget of nearly $6.5 million, about $177,000 less than anticipated. The budget includes the installation of air conditioning, which was included in the $9.5 million total budget approved for the school by district voters last year. Only one other district elementary school, Wheatland, has air conditioning.

The price also includes a larger-than-normal gym, costing the district about $225,000. The Naperville Park District may decide to pay for the expanded gym to have access to it for programming, said Doug Gallois, assistant superintendent for finance.

The school should be complete by the 2003-04 school year, Gallois said.

With shifts in attendance boundaries, the school will relieve overcrowding at Cowlishaw Elementary School. Gombert, McCarty, Steck and Young Elementary Schools also will have fewer pupils because of attendance boundary changes.

In other business, the Board of Education approved spending $34,000 to furnish 12 classrooms that are under construction at Graham and Brooks Elementary Schools.
