Event: The seventh annual Winter Ball of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, at the Newberry Library, Chicago. To benefit: This year, the $8,000 proceeds went to Community Health, a volunteer group that aids the uninsured, and Pilsen Homeless Services, which assists people in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Roll call: Students, alums, profs, friends — 360 in all. Raison d’etre: Seven years ago, second-year med students decided to give proceeds from an annual formal to a deserving charity. The idea of the Winter Ball grew from there. Let’s dance: Anatomy professor Dr. Norman Lieska and wife Kyra Semkova set things in motion by doing a mean Argentine tango, deftly expressing el alma del tango (the soul of tango), and surprising some students who didn’t know the couple once danced professionally and taught tango.
