The word “father” needs to be redefined. After reading Bob Greene’s account of child abuse–or perhaps “torture” is more accurate–we should consider a father a man who loves, cares for, nurtures, supports and protects a child he has brought into the world (Tempo, March 12 and 13). A man like the brute reported in Greene’s column doesn’t rate being called a father. He is simply a sire, or a sperm donator. Nothing more.
