Desperate times call for desperate measures, and some job seekers will do anything to win over a potential employer.

Johnson tells the story of a woman who stood on the street wearing a sandwich board that said “hire me” on one side and “learn how now” on the other. She handed out copies of her resume like store owners hand out coupons or menus to draw customers.

“I don’t know if she got a job offer; she did get two dates,” Johnson said.

Troy Hilbrands, a 27-year-old interior designer from Chicago who was laid off 11 months ago, recently had T-shirts printed with a caricature of himself and the slogan “Employ Troy” along with contact information. Some of his friends were kind enough to wear the T-shirts while participating in a run for charity over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Hilbrands said after the race he checked his Web site and he’d gotten 25 hits. He said he is considering calling out the troops again this weekend to participate in another running event.

“I do have hope that it will eventually turn into something,” Hilbrands said.

At the very least, he’ll get into shape.
