For the second time in three weeks, a metal detector was accidentally unplugged Wednesday at Logan International Airport, triggering an evacuation of 750 passengers and delaying 11 flights.

It was the second lapse of the week for Logan, which perhaps more than any airport in the country has been in the spotlight since Sept. 11, when two planes leaving Boston were hijacked and used to destroy the World Trade Center.

The plug was found to be out of its socket at 9:10 a.m. at the checkpoint leading to gates 25 through 36 of Terminal C.

A state police source said a member of the National Guard noticed the plug out of the socket and notified a member of the security staff, who attempted to plug the machine back in without notifying authorities.

The soldier reported the incident, and the terminal was evacuated.

It was not known Wednesday night how long the plug had been out of its socket.
