Edward Chandler, 70, a former Peoples Gas Co. employee who was a member of the Corvette Club of America and taught scuba diving for 25 years, died Sunday, March 17, in his Grayslake home after a heart attack. Born in Chicago, Mr. Chandler served with the Marines in the Korean War, reaching the rank of sergeant, said his son Mark. After the war, Mr. Chandler began his career with Peoples, where he worked for more than 40 years. Early on, he attended night classes to earn a college degree, his son said, eventually becoming a systems analyst in the company’s engineering department. Mr. Chandler retired in 1996 and moved to Palm Harbor, Fla., where he indulged a newfound love of Corvettes by owning two, his son said. Adventurous and good-humored, Mr. Chandler also was an avid scuba diver. “He went all over the Caribbean and he taught for a number of years,” his son said. “When I was in my teens, I remember he’d teach at the YMCA and then he would go on (diving) trips with his friends.” After living in Florida for about four years, Mr. Chandler moved back to Illinois to be closer to his family, his son said. Mr. Chandler is also survived by three daughters, Gail Pitts, Karen Chandler and Susan Chandler; and four grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Belvidere Rd., Grayslake. A service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
