I grew up in a house with my parents and three siblings. My mother’s battle with depression began at age 19. At age 68, she is still battling this illness.
Some of my childhood memories include my mother’s visits to hospitals and psychiatrists, as well as medications and shock therapy.
The most important memory, however, is that she loved her four children and her husband. Never once did she threaten or harm us in any way.
I battled postpartum depression after the birth of my second child. Like my mother, I never harmed my children. Unlike my mother, I recovered.
Congratulations to the jury in Texas for its verdict on Andrea Yates. Depression does not equal murder.
