My heart grieves for the families who have lost sons and daughters in this war. I have lost a son, so I know about broken hearts and dreams firsthand.

Because I am 78, I lived through World War II.

I remember casualty lists that covered the whole front page of the Tribune.

We pored over the lists to find the names of our loved ones, and if by chance his name was not there, we got a reprieve until the next horrendous list was published.

I am grateful that this war’s lists are shorter.
