Reds: Cincinnati left all of its starters behind in Sarasota and brought a cast of backups and minor-leaguers on the two-hour bus ride to face Cleveland in Winter Haven, Fla. Major League Baseball has a long-standing directive that requires teams to bring a minimum of four regulars on the road.

Pirates: Kip Wells, who’s been sharp this spring, gave up nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits in four innings of an 11-2 loss to Texas in Bradenton, Fla. . . . No. 1 starter Kris Benson (elbow) expects to rejoin the rotation in early May, about a month ahead of early projections.

Cardinals: Placido Polanco had three hits and an RBI, lifting his spring batting average above .400, as St. Louis tied Los Angeles 1-1 in 10 innings in Jupiter, Fla.

Astros: Roy Oswalt struck out 10 and allowed just three hits in six innings as the Astros beat the Tigers 9-1.

Giants: Livan Hernandez was tagged for eight hits and eight earned runs in five innings and San Francisco lost 13-3 to Anaheim in Tempe, Ariz. Hernandez, who will be the Opening Day starter for the third consecutive season, has an 11.67 spring ERA and has allowed 52 hits in 27 innings. “It’s too late to be concerned about him now,” manager Dusty Baker said. “You just hope he gets his act together during the regular season.”
