Dale Ford, part of the mass resignation of major-league umpires in 1999, is running for the 6th District seat in Tennessee’s state House.

Ford, 60, said he believes his experience as an umpire has prepared him for politics and isn’t worried about trying to beat an incumbent.

“I’ve never been intimidated in my life,” Ford said when announcing his candidacy.

Magic Johnson, who has been increasingly visible in California politics in recent years, said Monday he will run for mayor of Los Angeles if he decides the city needs a new voice to replace Mayor James K. Hahn when his term expires in 2005.

Johnson supported Hahn’s campaign last year, but said the mayor had made “a big, big mistake” by opposing Police Chief Bernard C. Parks’ bid for reappointment.

“I would run for the people, not for me,” Johnson said.
