While in town last week to address the Teamsters’ Women’s Conference, U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao dropped by Loyola University’s Water Tower campus to congratulate a group of girls participating in a national mentoring program for careers in science, technology and engineering.
The program, called GEM-SET for Girls’ E-Mentoring in Science, Engineering & Technology, links girls ages 13 to 18 with professional women who answer career questions via e-mail. The program is administered by the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau.
Natalie Self, a 14-year-old freshman at Downers Grove North High School, said the mentors really know their stuff. “Getting it from a woman who’s in the field is better than someone who says `I think this is what happens, but I’m not sure,'” Self said.
Chao shared a story about President Bush. She said he once delayed a news conference to give a cameraman time to set up. She said his gesture illustrates a quality all leaders should possess: “Be considerate of other people.”
