Now might seem like a risky time to switch careers. But a new survey by TrueCareers, an online recruiting service, found that 65 percent of 600 respondents, fearful of layoffs and fewer job opportunities in their fields, say they are at least looking into other industries.

It’s not a bad idea, said Michael Caggiano, CEO of TrueCareers, particularly if you’re looking at fast-growing industries or have transferable skills. “I think the taboo against switching industries is kind of going away,” he said.

Many career switchers believe a pay cut comes with the territory, but it doesn’t have to, Caggiano said. “If you have a skill that is necessary, for example in the health-care field . . . you may find you can make more money,” he said.
