Arthur E. Koegel, 78, of Chicago, died on March 26, 2002 of complications from Parkinson’s disease. A graduate of Senn High School in Chicago, Mr. Koegel worked as a supervisor at Melco Mfg. Co., an aluminum di-casting plant in the city. In 1947, he joined the family business, Koegel Coal Company, located on North Wolcott in Chicago. There, he and his brother Edward, grew the business into a thriving operation supplying the heating needs of apartment buildings on the north side of the city. The Clean Air Act of 1970 made coal economically unfeasible as a fuel source and by 1973 the business was closed. Mr. Koegel then invested in real estate in the city and continued in real estate investment and management until poor health forced him to retire. “He was a generous man” said son, Arthur Jr., ” and one who looked for the fun side of things.” Even in his diminished physical condition, he continued to play the sports he loved and in the summer of 2000, scored a “hole in one” while playing golf at Edgebrook Golf Course. He married Betty Lou in 1948. He is survived by his wife and three children, Arthur Jr., Janet (Mark) Hammer and Tina (Ronald) Vesely; his brother, Edward; and two grandchildren, Harmony (Daniel) Harbut and Mark Hammer Jr. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero, Chicago. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, with interment at Graceland Cemetery, Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10613. 800-708-7644. Funeral info: 773-736-3833
