A proposal allowing athletes to borrow up to $20,000 is part of an NCAA package designed to keep top athletes in college instead of bolting for the pros.
The NCAA board of directors could vote on the proposals designed for current student-athletes during its April 25 meeting, organization spokeswoman Jane Jankowski said Thursday.
The governing body’s current rules do not allow college athletes to borrow money based on their future earning potential, Jankowski said. The proposal would allow elite athletes to borrow money from a centralized bank.
The NCAA also is proposing to pay top athletes’ premiums for insurance against career-ending injuries.
Some top athletes already are allowed to buy their own insurance.
