Geneva School District 304 announced that Michael Jacoby, the district’s superintendent of finance, will become the superintendent of schools July 1. He will replace John Murphy, who is retiring after 12 years.

Jacoby, a former teacher, has worked for the district since 1986. He started with the district as a business manager.

The Board of Education considered 37 applicants from around the country before choosing Jacoby. Jacoby has worked on nine school-funding ballot measures.

“One of our goals is to maintain the personalized, small-town focus we have been able to have in our school system, which can be difficult to hold onto as we grow,” Jacoby said.

Enrollment in the district has more than doubled since 1990, to 4,800 pupils from 2,300.

By 2005, enrollment is expected to be 5,855.
