Stripes, it seems, are everywhere this season. Now we’re seeing an attractive take on stripes in a new collection of flat weaves by Michaelian & Kohlberg. The rugs, called “Stripes,” have straight and undulating lines. And even a polka dot design follows a straight line to give the illusion of a stripe.

The collection includes nine hand-woven variations on this theme. Made in China, the rugs come in runner and room sizes up to 14-by-20 feet.

With stripes, it may seem like it’s best to play it safe with the rest of the design in a room. Not so, says Tony Trotalli, general manager of Material Culture, where the rugs are sold.

“There is a great deal of variety in this line,” Trotalli says. “Stripes are easy to work with. You can add them to a room where there are other prints, like florals or geometric designs.” One reason the stripes work so well is that the colors are tone on tone.

“You know something is happening in the design, but it is not overly bold,” Trotalli says.

The rugs are $28 a square foot. The collection is at Material Culture, 401 N. LaSalle St. Call: 312-467-1490.
