The Village Board has approved a zoning change that would allow duplexes to be built on the northeast corner of Evanston Street and Bode Road.
The 6.6 acres of vacant land were zoned for single-family residential use, but officials of the Mitroff Cos. in Arlington Heights said their construction proposal would not alter the integrity of the neighborhood. The zoning was changed to two-family residential use.
“It’s commercial on two sides, and there’s only single-family homes on one side, so it made sense to us that it should be duplexes,” company spokesman Daniel Kovacevic said. The 18-month construction project is expected to begin in May.
Several trustees expressed concern that the project, coupled with work on Higgins Road, will create traffic problems on Bode and Evanston.
Mitroff will build 20 duplexes, mostly three-bedroom units priced from $264,000 to $294,000.
