Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I’ve been reading negative columns and comments on the Cubs’ broadcast booth for more than a year, and I think enough is enough.

It all started early in 2001 when articles bashing Chip Caray started to grace the sports page on a daily basis. So he has glottal attacks when he gets excited, and he gets repetitive . . . does anybody remember that the man had to follow the act of his grandfather Harry, one of the greatest announcers who ever got behind a microphone? It’s hard enough to live up to the expectations people will have of a new Cubs announcer, let alone one genetically linked to Harry Caray.

Recently I’ve read a comment or two criticizing Dave Otto as if he were a stumbling, bumbling train wreck. How about just enjoying baseball and turn down the volume if it’s that annoying to you? Turn on the radio and listen to the crazy antics of lovable Ron Santo. But cut the announcers a break–they have to do 162 of those three- to four-hour ballgames, one of the hardest things to do in the world.
