Mabel C. Conner, 96, of Barrington, a retired elementary school teacher, died of complications from hip surgery Monday, April 8, in Marriott Church Creek Nursing Facility in Arlington Heights. Mrs. Conner taught kindergarten through the 4th grade in Countryside Elementary School in Barrington for more than 25 years. She retired in 1971. A strong-willed woman who was “very much a lady,” Mrs. Conner “wanted to see children do their best and learn responsibility,” her daughter, Marcia O’Connor, said. Born in Chicago and raised in Tampico, Ill., Mrs. Conner graduated from National College of Education, now National-Louis University, in Evanston. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Other survivors include a sister, Eleanor Bates; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, when a service will begin in Immanuel United Church of Christ, 1500 Old Church Rd., Streamwood.
