I am not a Cubs fan, but I am behind them in their current squabble with the neighborhood rooftop groups, even though neither side is being completely honest.
We know that rooftop owners are not against the planned renovation of Wrigley Field just because they want to preserve Wrigley Field; they’re just afraid of losing their view, thereby losing the free money they’ve been making off the Cubs games for years.
The Cubs are not worried about security; they could have put tarps up Sept. 12 instead of waiting until the day before the opener to do it. They’re just getting even because the greedy rooftoppers are voting against their proposed expansion. Why should the rooftop owners make all that money without at least giving the Cubs a percentage? Would anybody pay to sit on those rooftops and party if no Cubs game were going on?
If the answer is no, then the Cubs deserve a percentage of whatever the rooftop owners take in.
If the answer is yes, then who cares if people can’t see into the park?
