First off, I would like to commend Sarah Barletta for an extremely well-written letter, “Homework may do more harm than good” (Voice of the people, April 8). That being said, I have to strongly disagree with her viewpoint, and that of others who believe that homework is a hindrance.

Although I do agree that extracurricular activities are very important for students, their main importance lies in the fact that they require the students to also focus on their academics, if they want to be eligible to participate. Although it is great that kids can learn teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship and many other lessons through extracurricular activities, it is just as important to strive for academic success. Not many people will be able to make a successful career out of these outside pursuits.

While it is great that teens can learn the value of hard work and money management through part-time jobs, these jobs should not interfere with their ability to further their education and thus expand their career horizons.

Education should be a priority. Bring on the books.
