The reason for the Cubs’ pathetic record is not a lack of hitting but a lack of effort. The lackadaisical play by Fred McGriff and Delino DeShields, supposed veteran leaders, is the reason the Cubs don’t win the close games.

The fact that this lazy, indifferent attitude is condoned by Don Baylor compounds the problem.

Baylor excuses their sorry play by saying that we can’t catch any breaks.

Good teams win ballgames through hard work and solid fundamental baseball.

Good teams create their own breaks.

Baylor must be replaced now, while this season can still be salvaged.
